Frequently Asked Question
What is a NIE, and how do I get one?
The NIE is the foreigners Identification Number (Numero de Identification Extranjera) and consists of a sheet of paper with your unique number on it. This document is obtained from the National Polica station in Almeria and is necessary to buy a car, register with a GP or open a resident bank account in Spain.
The old Residencia no longer exists, and you are required to produce both your passport and NIE document to prove your identity in official transactions.
We always advise you to request your NIE via a gestor (an administrator who deals with paperwork) as they will speed up the whole process and make it a lot easier to obtain. It usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks, and you have to pick the document up yourself.
We can put you in touch with a gestor who can come to the site and do all the paperwork for you. Please ask at the Reception for more information.
