Frequently Asked Question
Opening a bank account in Spain
If you are planning on spending any length of time in Spain, we advise you to open up a bank account in Spain. You will then be able to request a debit card and chequebook, and simply transfer funds out from the UK to your Spanish bank account. This is much cheaper then using UK cards to withdraw cash.
If you do not have an NIE then you can open up a non resident bank account using just your passport. In most cases this is the same as a resident bank account, with the exception of using it for large amounts of money. Some banks will charge you sightly more for having a non resident account. You will need to clarify your tax residency to maintian a non resident bank account, for more information click here.
For personal accounts you are advised to open an account with a Caja (savings bank) rather then a Banco (Bank). Cajamar and Unicaja both have a lot of local offices and are able to offer you service and internet banking in English.
