Medical care in Spain

If you do not have an NIE (foreigners identification number) then you will need to either use private health care or E-111 card to obtain emergency health care.

If you have an NIE and are registered on the Padron, then you can register with our local GP to obtain a Spanish Health Card which entitles you to free health care under the Spanish system.

Medical services in our area are considered to be excellent, clean and professional. Our local GP surgery is in Los Gallardos, our local medical centre is in Vera, some 10 minutes away, and a large area hospital is in Huercal Overa, 20 minutes down the road. However, if you do not speak Spanish you will need to take an interpreter with you to consultations otherwise you may be refused treatment.

However, in Spain long term palliative care is almost non existent, as the system does not offer an NHS style system of home visits by nurses and doctors.
